Donabate/Portrane Educate Together National School (Ireland)
Project Meeting in France 15-19 October 2008
Carniny Primary School, Ballymena
Since 1999 the school has been involved in project work with a number of
partner schools in Europe. Interest in foreign languages has developed as a
result of contact with its international partners and the school takes part in
NEELB's Primary Languages Initiative. In 2001-02 the school secured the
services of a German teaching assistant under the EU Socrates scheme and has
again been successful in its bid for further assistants in 2002-03, 2003-04,
2004-5 and 2005-6.
Comenius Project 1
Carniny's first Comenius project was entitled "Our Local Area". Pupils
exchanged information about lifestyles, festivals (e.g. Christmas), and
daily routines in the regions of the partner schools. Displays of project
materials were mounted in the school. Pupils produce and exchanged videos to
introduce themselves and their schools and took part in a video-conference
in March 2001. Pupils corresponded with their partners via e-mail.
Speaking of the impact
of the project, the Principal reports, "The project has impacted greatly on
the whole school community and very positive links have been established
with our partner schools. The work undertaken in the project was purposeful
and children were provided with opportunities that enhanced their learning
experiences. Children gained great understanding of the similarities and
differences within some of the different countries in the European Union."
Comenius Project 2
Building on the success of its first Comenius project the school is now
working with partners in Hungary, Sweden and France. The children have been
engaging enthusiastically in all aspects of the project. They have produced
a booklet entitled ‘Our Environment’ providing information on flowers, trees
and creatures in each of the participating countries. They have also
produced tourist information brochures on each of the regions and been
involved in writing newspaper reports about local industries. The project
has enhanced the pupil’s ICT skills. They have been using the digital
camera, scanner and word processing in their project work and have enjoyed
corresponding with pupils in the different countries.
